Billy Hunter, executive director of the what used
to be the NBA players union, has revived
discussion of players potentially staring their own league should the entire
2011-12 season be canceled.
“There are faculties where we can do that,” Hunter
said, according to tweets from author Touré (via SLAM). “Can’t play at MSG but can play
at St John’s .”
Knicks forward Amare Stoudemire made a similar statement last
month, saying that talk among players about forming a new league was “very, very serious. It's just a matter of us
strategically coming up with a plan, a blueprint and putting it together. So
we'll see how this lockout goes. If it goes one or two years, then we've got to
start our own league."
It’s hard to envision such a venture coming
together, as barriers to entry are extremely high. Securing venues in which to
play is just one of these. A broadcast outlet, sponsors, insurance providers
and a whole lot more would also have to be found. David Stern and team owners
won’t take discussion of a new league very seriously
