A 23-year-old Vietnamese woman developed the appearance of a 73-year-old in a matter of days.
Now 26, Nguyen Thi Phuong had been an otherwise healthy young woman until 2008 when she suddenly started to suffer from sagging skin and a puffy face. Before long she looked like a woman in her 70's, but couldn't afford to seek medical treatment. Doctors have offered to examine her free of charge in an effort to get to the bottom of her mysterious condition.
Doctors say it may have been the long-term use of traditional medicines that caused the condition as they are often spiked with corticoids. These steroids speed up the effects of the unregulated remedies but could also have triggered the rare skin disease mastocytosis, where the body produces too many mast cells.
